A Photographer’s Birthday: Capturing Moments While Making Memories

As a family and portrait photographer, I spend most of my days behind the lens, capturing the love and connection between others. But on my birthday, the focus shifts—not just to celebrating another year of life but to embracing the very moments I always encourage my clients to cherish.

Starting the Day with Gratitude

My birthday morning begins with the best gift of all—time with my family. There’s nothing like waking up to my son, Micah, excitedly shouting, “Happy Birthday!” (because let’s be honest, kids make birthdays feel extra special). A slow morning filled with hugs, laughter, and maybe a little breakfast from one of my favorite breakfast spots - Driftaway Cafe, sets the perfect tone for the day.

A Day of Simple Joys

Since I spend so much of my time behind the camera, today is about being present. Whether it’s sitting on the front stoop enjoying the fresh morning air or a quiet coffee moment with loved ones, I soak in the everyday magic that I so often freeze in photographs for others.

Of course, no day would be complete without some form of photography. But on my birthday, it’s not about perfect lighting or ideal poses—it’s about candid, raw moments. My family knows the drill: grab my camera or phone and snap away. The blurry, silly, or unexpected shots? Those are my favorite.

An Afternoon Adventure

Living in South Jersey, we’re spoiled with beautiful scenery and charming spots to explore. Maybe in the next few days, we’ll take a drive to the shore, where Micah can collect some seashells. Or perhaps we’ll visit a local farm, feeding the animals and indulging in fresh ice cream. These are the moments I want to remember—the ones that remind me why I do what I do.

Evening Celebrations & Reflection

As the sun sets, we gather for dinner—sometimes at a favorite restaurant, or sometimes around our own table. No matter where we are, we make sure that my favorite ice cream, and cake are there and laughter is filling the air. It is in these moments that I take a pause to reflect on the past year; I think about the growth in my business as well as the incredible families I’ve had the honor of photographing.

This life, filled with storytelling through images, is a blessing. And on my birthday, I’m reminded that while I spend my days capturing memories for others, the most meaningful moments are the ones I get to live with the people I love.

So here’s to another year of creating, cherishing, and rising to the occasion—because every birthday is a reminder to Forget Everything And Rise.
